Rating: 92+/100

This white wine made by the Cave des Vignerons de Pfaffenheim in Alsace, France is a 100% Pinot Gris wine from the Grand Cru web site of Steinert.

The Steinert winery is a Grand Cru web site within the Alsace wine area of France, mendacity 13 kilometers (9 miles) south of Colmar city, and overlooking the village of Pfaffenheim.

It sits just under the Schauenberg mountain, often called the mountain of contemplation, which is taken into account to be an necessary place of mystical vitality.

At Steinert, vines develop on comparatively steep slopes, East-facing, and whose soils are made from limestone projections reverse the Alsace plain, the Rhine and the Black Forest.

Tasting Notes

This Pinot Gris Grand Cru is available in a vibrant lemon-yellow shade, trying shiny and glossy but fairly concentrated within the yellow-to-grey spectrum, and that includes a touch of the everyday gray hues of the ‘Gris’ grape.

The nostril could be very vibrant too, that includes aromas of lemon like the colour steered. There’s a clear tacky aspect to the fragrant profile, surprisingly!

However don’t get me mistaken. Not the unfavourable tacky scent. Extra like an pleasurable one in actual fact. The wine considerably smells like parmesan, or extra exactly like Grana Padano, within the sense that it smells like floral milk, aromas of advantageous cream blended with notes of meadow flowers. Add hints of apricot and delicate contemporary pineapple to get the total image of an intriguing and tempting nostril.

Put the wine in your mouth although, and all of it begins to make extra sense. The off-dry sweetness surprises barely at first for those who anticipated a very dry wine. It’s matched and neutralised by a vibrant mineral acidity although, making the wine style crisp and refreshing, and practically dry general.

The mineral acidity underlines pungent flavors of lemon juice and freshly-squeezed orange, maybe pink grapefruit too. A tropical edge, like contemporary pineapple and litchi, and a wealth of floral tones, elderflower and lily.

Add delicate notes of candy spices, and also you’re in for a posh and layered tasting expertise.

Total

The precision within the expression of the fruit character that’s so typical of limestone terroir (such because the Steinert Grand Cru of Alsace), which is lean, clear, and glossy. It delivers citrus, stonefruit, floral, and tropical characters in an excellent stability, uncommon at this degree of refinement in a Pinot Gris.

A pleasant white wine for these in the hunt for a singular tasting expertise, floral and hyper fruity, but with the magnificence and mineral freshness you count on and maybe love from Alsace.

Get pleasure from 🙂

How Good is Pfaff Riesling Steinert Grand Cru?

Wine Evaluation of 2015 La Cave des Vignerons de Pfaffenheim Pfaff Riesling Steinert Grand Cru, Alsace, France

Rating: 90/100

The Steinert winery is a Grand Cru web site within the Alsace wine area of France, mendacity 13 kilometers (9 miles) south of Colmar city, and overlooking the village of Pfaffenheim.

It sits slightly below the Schauenberg mountain, often known as the mountain of contemplation, which is taken into account to be an vital place of mystical power.

At Steinert, vines develop on comparatively steep slopes, East-facing, and whose soils are manufactured from limestone projections reverse the Alsace plain, the Rhine and the Black Forest.

Tasting Notes

This Grand Cru Riesling is available in a vibrant and glossy lemon-yellow shade, of medium depth with hints of inexperienced hues. The everyday shade of a dry Riesling, barely pale and barely green-ish.

The nostril can also be attribute of a Riesling wine, bursting with lime aromas, and augmented by touches of tropical notes, like pineapple and mango, as nicely floral notes of elderflower, and a discrete trace of petrol. Luscious and fruity it smells, however pungently zesty from a lot upfront citrus scents.

The palate is zesty with a clear and biting acidity, the citric sort of acidity the truth is with a salivating and crystal-like mineral really feel, mirroring the large burst of lime flavors you expertise throughout tasting. Assume ‘mojito cocktail’ to get a way of what it considerably tastes like!

The wine is, surprisingly, fairly candy nevertheless for an Alsace Riesling. Not the frankly candy sort, however clearly with sufficient sweetness to be described as ‘off-dry’.

The sugars assist balancing the sharp acidity, and so they convey out the tropical flavors including a way of lusciousness. However in addition they weigh the entire, except you want your Alsace wine a little bit candy. It may very well be a bonus for pairing with candy/savory meals in information, like with Asian delicacies.

The end could be very varietal, delivering layers of petrol, kerosene, white pepper, and citronella. Zesty but sticky on the identical time, a stickiness amplified by the residual sugar.

Total

A clear and zesty Alsace Riesling in an off-dry concentrated varietal fashion. Pungent citrus and tropical fruit characters meet the petrol and underlying spiciness we love in Riesling wine, delivered in a exact and glossy fruity complexity.

A wine to be paired with candy/bitter dishes, and companion for seafood entrees, contemporary oysters, or creamy muscle mass, given you get pleasure from a touch of off-dry sweetness to your white wine.

Take pleasure in 🙂

How Good is Château de Ciffre Saint-Chinian Grand Vin?

Wine Evaluation of 2014 Château de Ciffre Grand Vin Saint-Chinian Crimson, Languedoc, France

Rating: 92+/100

This Languedoc purple by well-known Lorgeril home from the Languedoc wine area, produced on their Chateau de Ciffre property within the small Cabardès appellation close to Carcassonne, is made out of 100% Syrah grapes.

The ageing/maturation was run in French oak wine barrels for 12 months.

Tasting Notes

This Languedoc purple is available in a reasonably darkish and vibrant purple shade, of a juicy bloody purple with slight hints of purple hues.

The nostril is a delicate mixture of ripe purple berry aromas with a way of deep earthiness.

The fruity characters are warming and comforting, with notes of juicy and candy blackberry and hints of peppery blackcurrant. These really feel very contemporary, though generously ripe for positive.

The earthiness, just like the scent of moist clay, supplies character and depth to the fragrant profile, whereas spicy tones of white and black pepper elevate issues up with a slight chili-like really feel. Hints of vanilla and caramel however sweeten and spherical up the profile.

The palate surprises, right away, by its clean roundness. Tannins are dense and extra importantly velvety, virtually silky. They arrive with a coating oily physique, for an general sensation of creaminess in your mouth. This generosity is balanced by an excellent acidity reducing via the oily texture, amplifying and freshening up the bursting purple berry flavors.

There’s an explosion of peppery spiciness and natural characters (like contemporary Provencal herbs, sage and thyme particularly) from the mid-palate on.

Finally, the end feels heat, fruity and comforting, barely scorching from the spices, but in addition sweet-feeling from a wealth of vanilla and layers of caramelized hazelnut.

General

A whole Saint-Chinian wine, dense and beneficiant, full of a wealth of zesty ripe fruit character, properly mixed with the real expression of its terroir within the type of a scorching spiciness and earthy tones.

The entire appears to have been coated in well-integrated oak, that has deepened and smoothened up the wine, however that some could discover have weighted issues up a little bit.

Take pleasure in 🙂

Krug Grand Cuvee- Past Editions

Olivier Krug says Krug is OK… We think it is a little better than that!

I have a small amount (only 60 bottles each) of some exciting Krug Grand Cuvee. This is a preview of how Krug will be selling the Grand Cuvee in the future, with each new batch of Krug featuring not only the ID on the back, but also the edition on the front, counting up from the foundation of the house in the 1800’s. These first three were dated posthumously as most of the bottles were simply sold as Grand Cuvee. These early editions are bound to become collector’s items… That being said, I hope these will only be collected to be drunk!

Sixty bottles each of edition 160,161 and 162 is all there is!

They originally came as six packs with two each of the three editions below. After a little over a month in stock, I decided to split them up to make them more accessible to Krug lovers. I don’t expect that they will last long now that they are available by the bottle. This is what I have:

Krug “Grande Cuvée” 160 Ème Édition Brut Champagne $ 159.99: Based on 2004, this Grand Cuvee is assembled from 121 lots from 12 different vintages. The oldest wine is from 1990. The varietal composition is not available.

Krug “Grande Cuvée” 161 Ème Édition Brut Champagne $ 159.99: Based on 2005, this Grand Cuvee is assembled from 134 lots from 12 different vintages, the oldest being 1990. It is composed of 44% Pinot Noir, 37% Chardonnay and 19% Meunier.

Krug “Grande Cuvée” 162 Ème Édition Brut Champagne $ 159.99: Based on 2006, this Grand Cuvee is assembled from 142 lots from 11 different vintages, the oldest being 1990. It is composed of 44% Pinot Noir, 35% Chardonnay and 21% Meunier.

Additionally, I saved three of the Krug “Three Editions Wooden Case” Gift Case (6pk=1 Unit) with two each of all three. They are $ 959 for the six bottle case.

I am not sure when the first batch of regular Grand Cuvee with an Edition on it will arrive in the US, or what that edition will be. I know that it won’t be before our distributor sells out of the Grand Cuvee with the regular front label however! I know that Olivier is very excited to move forward with this project, he was very enthusiastic when I talked to him about it in March. You can see the article here if you are interested.

If you are interested in the bottles above, I suggest acting fast. They will sell quickly.

A toast to you!
